Last.fm - Music library enhancer

June 6th, 2008

Have you ever wanted to get content related to the music you listen, like music recommendations, video, or events? Here’s a how Last.fm can improve your music experience.

Last.fmLast.fm is the most transparent web service I use. Thanks to a small software that runs in the background, it keeps track of the music I listen on my computer. Then I can view statistics, suggestions of artists that are similar to the ones I like, compare my music tastes with my friends and much more…

So to get the most out of Last.fm, you have to create an account on the website, download and install a little program called Scrobbler, then just play your music as you usually do. And thanks to that scrobbler, Last.fm keeps a record of what you listen, so once you’ve ’scrobbled’ enough tracks, you can start digging into its features.

I must say the main reason I use Last.fm is to discover new artists. Basically, I look at similar artists to the ones I’ve been listening recently or view the Last.fm recommendations. But there are a more features like comparing your music taste with your friends, watch video clips, get a list of upcoming music events in your area, or even create online radio players that you can embed in your website/blog. There is also a page offering a good amount of tools to enhance your experience with the service.

The only dark side I can see about the service is its interface. It’s ok, though it could be better… But I’ve recently seen a hint of a new look. So I guess it’s a minor issue.

Thanks to its transparency, ease of use and features, I really think Last.fm is a must-have to anyone who enjoys music and wants more from their music library.
