I got the iPhone 3G!

July 12th, 2008

The wait is over! I have the iPhone 3G! I must say it’s been rough. I’ve been waiting for more than a year because the first version didn’t cross the border to Canada. Now I got it, and I’m thrilled!

So I woke up at 6am this morning, and prepared myself while watching the news to see if they would talk about lines of people waiting at the Montreal store. And indeed some guys were waiting. So I hurried and joined them. I was the 80th. I planned on getting the 16GB, but after around 40 people got out of the store, they were out of stock for this model and only got 8GB ones left. So no 16GB for me, at least I saved $100!

You’ve probably heard of the issues Apple had with iPhone activation through iTunes… well I experienced it. And after more than 4 hours waiting in the line, I finally got out of the shop with my new mobile buddy! Happy and excited.

iPhone 3GI almost ran to get back home. Opened the box, plugged the iPhone on the computer to activate it (’cause it didn’t work at the store), and an error showed up. iTunes activation was down. I left it plugged, and browsed the App Store in iTunes. After a couple of hours, I checked again the iPhone, and it was running!

I’ve been playing with it since then. I first tried to configure a couple of things like emails, but the configuration was already synced from Mail.app! Nothing to do! It also synced my Safari bookmarks, and contacts. Impressive!

I installed some applications from the App Store, and I must say it greatly enhances the functions of the iPhone. There are hundreds of application, of any kind. I only tried the free ones (already spent enough money today!), but I think the best are the ones you have to pay for. Anyway, this gives a good idea of what the iPhone is capable of, and it’s really amazing how much you can do with such a small device!

Unfortunately it’s not all perfect out here. As you may know, wireless companies in Canada offer crazy bad plans. So even though I think my plan is pretty decent, I don’t have Visual Voicemail. I’d have to pay 8 more bucks a month to have it, and I can’t afford it right now… I wanna see how things go in the next couple of months…

I didn’t write about the iPhone earlier because I don’t wanna talk about something I don’t know or haven’t tried. Now expect to see more posts regarding that wickedly awesome device!
