3 apps to help you remove apps properly
July 21st, 2008
Installing most of the applications on a Mac is as easy as a drag and drop. But if you remove an app just by dropping it into the trash, you may not remove some files that have been created when you used it. Here are 3 apps that help doing the job.
Almost every application, once you use them, store some files, like their preferences, in various folders. And if you want to completely remove one, you’ll need to remove those files. But it can be a pain to retrieve them manually. Luckily, some apps can do it for us. I have tried 3 of them (I don’t know if there’s more though).
All these 3 apps work pretty much all the same way: you launch it, then drag and drop on it the application you want to delete, then it does the rest.
AppZapper is the only one you have to pay for, and honestly, I don’t think it’s worth it. It has a funny zapper sound when you delete an app, but that still doesn’t justify its price. It was included in a bundle, so I didn’t really choose to buy it.
AppDelete is like AppZapper without the cool zapper sound, but it’s free.
AppCleaner is like AppDelete, on steroids. Like the 2 others above, you can drag and drop the app you want to delete, but it also lists all the apps, widgets and other stuff, to avoid the lazy guys the ‘pain’ of dragging and dropping.
Final word
It’s known that uninstallers on Windows rarely remove all data from the computer. Well it’s not the case on Macs, thanks to these 3 applications. In the end, I’d recommend AppCleaner, it’s free and is the most advanced one.
